Our #ESR Coen van de Ven presented his work Automotive RADAR Planar Antenna Optimization Based on Conformal Transformation Optics (CTOs) at eucap euraap 2023, where he showed an optimization of the radiation pattern for automotive radar antennas, looking into reducing the ripple on the radiation pattern, which typically reduces the sensing performance. In the paper, an important connection is made between CTO and the Transverse Electromagnetic Waveguide mode, which is used for joint optimization of the radiation pattern as well as the conformal transformation. Additionally, a rescaling approach is used to eliminate the permittivities smaller than one which are unfeasible for manufacturing with 3D printing. In the presentation, the feasibility was shown with a physical slotted waveguide antenna. Excellent results!
